CANADIAN LIGHTNING PROTECTION EXPLAINED IN NEW ARTICLE

The March 2016 issue of Construction Canada provides an in-depth look at Canadian lightning protection and architectural practices.

The March 2016 issue of Construction Canada provides an in-depth look at Canadian lightning protection and architectural practices. Lightning strikes Canada more than 2 million times and costs the economy nearly a billion dollars annually. While lightning activity is greatest in southern parts of Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan and the front range of Alberta, British Columbia and the Maritimes are also at risk — especially as climate change increases thunderstorm frequency. Canadian architects and builders must be aware of changes to the Provincial lightning rod acts and understand the need to supplement CAN/CSA-B72-M87 – Installation Code Lightning Protection Systems with more current standards from NFPA, UL, and LPI. Case studies of recent projects indicate new directions in lightning protection.
